Meg’s Magic

Posted by kris on April 11, 2008

One of the more wonderful aspects of my life would be the fact that once the busy season is over, I get all this time in my hands to do whatever I want and totally relax myself while doing it. Be it reading books in my room, taking a run or walk outside, checking out new movies at the theater without crowds on weekdays, bumming in a cafe with a nice hot coffee & book or friend to chat with… I know I am suppose to be out taking pictures for my portfolio but thing is, I’ve been a little downcast over recent situations in the country and how the tourism industry is going stagnant in the meantime.

So to put these disturbing & slightly depressing things off my mind, there’s no better cure than to have a movie with Meg Ryan in it to lighten one’s troubled soul.

I don’t know about the general population of movie goers, but there’s just something about the magic in Meg Ryan’s eyes that makes you want to dream and dare to fall in love and have hope for magical endings in life. And one of the best things about her light-hearted movies is that it makes my brother’s eyes sparkle with such childish innocence whenever he’s watching her.

Yes, my brother the macho ‘i love football’, drinking-with-the-guys-during-weekends, talking-crap-on-the-phone-for-long-hours, futsal-for-hours-when-not-working and coming-home-with-scratched-knees, blasting deafening experimental rock/heavy rock music that are new-bands-out-of-the-old-bands…etc. Out of all this and he’s easily taken apart while watching “Sleepless in Seattle”, “City of Angels”, “Kate & Leopold” or his absolute favourite “You’ve Got Mail”.

Perhaps it is the color of those intense yet almost-childish eyes of hers that charms you off your feet. Perhaps it is the way she speaks out as her character. Or the way she walks that same walk of hers from since the days of “French Kiss” .. I don’t know…

Watching her movies, especially romantic comedies, with my bro, it makes your toes curl with happy anticipation.

One time I came home after a particularly long, tiring and frustrating day at work, I saw him all curled up with his face half buried in the cushion pillows he was hugging. I went over to see what he was watching, and it was toward the end of “You’ve Got Mail” and he was all misty eyed.

“You’re watching it again?” I asked, amused. Behind the pillow, his eyes smiled at me and then continued watching the screen. I relaxed myself to the sofa and watched it with him, like I always do. Towards the end, his favourite heroine gets her happy ending knowing that the person she loves is who she had longed wished to turn out to love her in return.

As I got up to get to my room to shower, he looked up with me with happy sparkly eyes and said to me, “Don’t you just love happy endings?” and sighed in satisfaction.

I absolutely adore my brother for this. And he’s the reason why I love watching Meg Ryan too.
